چکیده

We have statistically analyzed the spatially integrated far-infrared (FIR) emissions of the complete volumeand luminosity-limited sample of late-type (later than S0) Virgo cluster galaxies measured using the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) by Tuffs et al. (2002) in bands centered on 60, 100 & 170μm. 30 out of 38 galaxies detected at all three wavelengths contain a cold dust emission component, present within all morphological types of late-type systems ranging from early giant spirals to Blue Compact Dwarfs (BCDs), and which could not have been recognized by IRAS. We fitted the data with a superposition of two modified grey-body functions, physically identified with a localized warm dust emission component associated with HII regions (whose temperature was constrained to be 47K), and a diffuse emission component of cold dust. The cold dust temperatures were found to be broadly distributed, with a median of 18K, Max Planck Institut für Astronomie, Königstuhl 17, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany Research Associate, The Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy, Str. Completing HI observations of galaxies in the Virgo Cluster

High sensitivity (rms noise ∼ 0.5 mJy) 21-cm H i line observations were made of 33 galaxies in the Virgo cluster, using the refurbished Arecibo telescope, which resulted in the detection of 12 objects. These data, combined with the measurements available from the literature, provide the first set of H i data that is complete for all 355 late-type (Sa-Im-BCD) galaxies in the Virgo cluster with m...

ISO’s Contribution to the Study of Clusters of Galaxies

Starting with nearby galaxy clusters like Virgo and Coma, and continuing out to the furthest galaxy clusters for which ISO results have yet been published (z = 0.56), we discuss the development of knowledge of the infrared and associated physical properties of galaxy clusters from early IRAS observations, through the “ISO-era” to the present, in order to explore the status of ISO’s contribution...

Mid - IR emission of galaxies in the Virgo cluster and in the Coma supercluster . IV . The nature of the dust heating sources

We study the relationship between the mid-IR (5-18 µm) emission of late-type galaxies and various other star formation tracers in order to investigate the nature of the dust heating sources in this spectral domain. The analysis is carried out using a sample of 123 normal, late-type, nearby galaxies with available data at several frequencies. The mid-IR luminosity (normalized to the H-band lumin...

Environmental Effects on Late-Type Galaxies in Nearby Clusters

The transformations taking place in late-type galaxies in the environment of rich clusters of galaxies at z = 0 are reviewed. From the handful of late-type galaxies that inhabit local clusters, whether they were formed in-situ and survived as such, avoiding transformation or even destruction or if they are newcomers that recently infall from outside, we can learn an important lesson on the late...
